Oklahoma City was settled on April 22, 1889. Back then, this area was known as the unassigned lands. This just means that it was untouched by European settlers and was not assigned to any Native American tribes. Because of this, the land was entirely open for settling. This period was known as "The Land Run". Between 1890 and 1900, about ten thousand people colonized the land and doubled the population. Oklahoma became a part of the Union in 1907. By this time, Oklahoma City had taken Guthrie's place as capital of the new state. Today, when staying in local hotels Oklahoma City visitors can enjoy the rich culture of this city.
